In Cavern of Dreams, we follow the journey of Finn, a young dragon searching for eggs stolen by an evil entity. The clues he gathers lead him to the Cavern of Dreams, where he meets a strange hermit named Sage. Though mysterious, Sage is willing to help Finn find his siblings. However, she also warns him of the dangers lurking within the cavern.

Throughout the story, Finn travels to new lands and encounters a variety of characters. Cavern of Dreams is a 3D platformer focused on puzzles and item collection. What sets it apart from other similar games is its strong influence from N64 titles, particularly Banjo-Kazooie, both visually and in terms of gameplay.

Initially, Finn can only roll and jump, but by finding eggs, he unlocks new abilities. These primarily allow him to access new areas and unlock new levels. The game doesn’t include combat, which might bore some players, but the fluid gameplay and controls more than make up for it. Finn cannot die or be injured in the traditional sense.

Cavern of Dreams functions as a central hub connecting the different worlds. Each world has its own theme, challenges, and puzzles. For example, the first area explored is the Lake of the Lost Leaf, where an inaccessible platform blocks progress. During exploration, a small tree with a laughing apple is discovered. Picking it up and throwing it to the ground causes a small tree to grow, allowing Finn to climb it. Other puzzles require the player to pay attention to clues scattered throughout the environment.

Finn has useful items to aid him on his adventure, such as clown shoes. These allow him to walk on air by launching himself off the edge of a platform, much like the flying boots in Ocarina of Time. They are also essential for solving certain puzzles. The platforming sections are well-balanced thanks to precise controls.

Maps, mushrooms, and eggs can be found throughout the game. Your siblings are inside the eggs and are the primary objective, as mentioned earlier. By collecting a certain number of eggs, Sage grants you a new power. Finn will then be able to spit water or glide through the air. You can see the eggs in the center, where Sage resides. Some can be hatched with a flick of Finn’s tail. Baby dragons can be given mushrooms, which open a shortcut to a remote area of the cavern, as well as hearts. These hearts are needed to unlock doors with the same number. The maps form an encyclopedia detailing all the friends and enemies you’ll encounter on your adventure. They are usually located in hard-to-reach places and encourage the player to return after unlocking a new ability. One of the main objectives of the game is to find all the mushrooms and eggs available in each area.

The soundtrack includes several tracks that fit together perfectly, with simple melodies ranging from gentle to sinister. I thoroughly enjoyed the background music and sound effects, especially Finn’s voice when he jumps or runs joyfully through the levels. I was impressed by the game’s overall presentation and by how the developer captured the N64-era style while adding modern elements.
