About this Game

Bloodless was created by 3D Realms, the developers behind the popular *Duke Nukem* game. It is an action-adventure title with a unique art style and an innovative combat system centered around counterattacks and non-lethal combat.

As for the story, the game takes place in the country of Bakuga. You play as a warrior named Tooy, who is considered a coward – and practically a deserter – by her own people after leaving her homeland, weary of her past life and the blood she’s shed. Much of the dialogue recalls experiences with her former comrades, and she still seems to carry a deep sense of guilt. She returns to Bakuga to fight the ruling military regime, but, as previously mentioned, has sworn to never take a life again; therefore, she fights without bloodshed, true to the title of the game.

In terms of gameplay, you don’t directly attack your opponent at first. Tooy refuses to use her katana, so you must face enemy attacks instead. These counterattacks disarm your rivals and cause them to flee, which counts as a victory for you. However, as the game progresses, the enemies get stronger and use more unpredictable moves and even unblockable attacks. Therefore, you have to be careful to perform precise counterattacks or dodge at the right time.

Fights usually take place in confined spaces, reminiscent of the style of many 1970s samurai movies. The game world is divided into different screens that you can navigate through. You have a map to help you move around Bakuga, and – as Mark noted – at certain points you’ll be pulled into battle, and the screen will lock; you cannot leave until you have defeated all enemies. Although the game starts simple, the difficulty quickly increases; you will need to master the combat systems to progress. You must constantly balance managing your *chi* and positioning, and decide when to dodge and when to attack.

You will find herbs and badges along the way. You can combine herbs to brew tea at specialty shops and store it in flasks for use in combat. The simplest tea is green tea, which restores health. As you progress, you will discover more complex teas, such as ginger tea, that prevent your *chi* from depleting for a period of time.

The game features a skill tree system that allows you to upgrade your skills. For example, the ability to block while standing still is very useful, as it is difficult to move and block at the same time when facing multiple enemies at once. There are advanced skills, such as blocking rocks from the ground to stun enemies. As you play, you unlock more skills, and the game world is quite expansive. There’s also a “B-Tower” system: repairing them unlocks the fast travel system.

Bloodless costs £34.90, but you can download it for free here. It’s a rich, unique experience that offers a rewarding challenge. The game only takes up 1.6 GB and lasts between 7 and 10 hours, depending on your skill level.
