Unlike recent titles in the series, which featured three-member parties, Ys X allows you to control both Adol and Karna. This change improves the duo mechanics in a very pleasing way. Combat flows engagingly as you switch between controlling a single character and using duo mode when the situation calls for it. The experience feels natural, agile, and fluid. Above all, the combat is easy to grasp and understand. Each skill is a visual treat, and they unlock at a steady pace, offering a wide variety of options. Whether you’re using solo or duo skills, combat always feels dynamic and rewarding; even the character’s movement feels incredibly fluid.

Exploration is truly engaging and fun. You can traverse environments quickly, and interactive objects are placed organically. Some dungeons have small puzzles that can be solved intuitively by observing the surroundings.

Another notable feature is the ship’s navigation engine. You have to sail from island to island to discover new areas, and you can upgrade your ship by recruiting more crew members. Navigating the seas offers a great opportunity to discover islands beyond the main objective and offers fantastic benefits. Ys X: Nordics includes both mandatory and optional ship battles; constantly upgrading your ship will really make you feel like an unstoppable force.

The visuals and audio are excellent. The characters have a vibrant, striking style. The environments are full of grass and vegetation, and specific areas – like the ship itself – are also teeming with life. Falcom once again delivers a fantastic soundtrack: I love the energetic boss fight themes, and the ambient music perfectly complements the characters’ agile movements. *Ys X* also seamlessly integrates elements of Norse mythology into the dialogue, adding a distinctive flair to the characters’ expressions. The plot is compellingly structured and generates a lot of suspense from the start. However, the pace can be a bit uneven – especially in the first half of the game – and it takes a while to build momentum.

All in all, *Ys X: Nordics* is a fantastic action RPG to add to your Nintendo Switch collection. It’s so packed with quests, encounters, and activities that it can easily take 30 hours or more to complete. It lives up to the legacy of the *Ys* franchise, and while it’s not perfect, it’s packed with stylish action and charismatic characters that make it truly endearing.
