About this Game
Released in 2014 on most platforms in Japan, Puyo Puyo Tetris didn’t arrive in North America until 2017. Puyo Puyo Tetris’s gameplay is unique: it combines the two games into one, allowing you to play each of their classic styles separately. Numerous single-player and multiplayer modes await you.
The main single-player mode is a complete story mode, enhanced with cutscenes and English voice acting—a welcome addition. Each chapter of the game is preceded and followed by cutscenes.
In story mode, you perform various actions and complete 10 levels per chapter. The gameplay alternates between Tetris and Puyo, a combination of the two, and all the different game modes of Tetris and Puyo. Therefore, mastering both Puyo and Tetris is essential, and if I were only skilled at one of them, I would have had a very hard time. However, the more you play, the more you improve in the style where you were initially weaker.
In this game mode, you face off against opponents, each with different Puyos or Tetris blocks, alternating until one side loses. Creating long combos or clearing entire lines in Tetris disrupts the opposing side and leads to defeat.
Challenges are also available, such as reaching a certain score in Tetris or a certain level in Puyo within a time limit.
Fusion mode blends Puyo and Tetris blocks. The gameplay remains the same, but the pace is extremely fast, requiring you to string together the best combos.
My favorite mode is Swap: two boards, one Puyo and one Tetris, swap places every few seconds. It’s incredibly fast and mentally stimulating.
Big Bang mode is comparable to Puyo’s Endless Fever mode. You have a predefined game board, and the goal is to create combos with Puyos to trigger a chain reaction and clear the screen, or, in Tetris, to slowly drop blocks to clear lines. The player with the most combos within the time limit inflicts damage on their opponent. Reaching zero points means losing the game.
Party Mode features item boxes that appear. Activating them with combos or by clearing lines grants effects such as reducing your opponent’s score, blocking their vision, and more.
You can also play all these modes solo to practice. If you prefer, you can also play the Puyo Puyo and classic Tetris modes separately. These modes are also playable in multiplayer, both locally and online.
The multiplayer modes are incredibly fun and chaotic, especially Party Mode, which triggers items that will put your puzzle skills to the test. You can also play online against players from around the world.
The game also features a shop where you can buy new Puyo and Tetris skins to use in single-player, multiplayer, and the tutorial, for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.
If you’re a fan of Puyo Puyo, Tetris, or both, you’ll love this game. The numerous single-player, multiplayer, and story modes will challenge you unless you’re a pro at both.
