About this Game
The Messenger is an exceptional indie game that surpasses many retro titles. On par with Axiom Verge or Shovel Knight, it draws inspiration from the classics while offering enough new elements to avoid repetition.
You play as an unnamed ninja, a member of a clan located on the western edge of the world—the only survivors trained to defeat an army of demons. A warrior from the West entrusts you with a scroll to deliver to the Mountain of Snapshots. No one knows what it contains, but it is said to solve all problems if you reach its destination.
You will progress through side-scrolling levels that gradually increase in difficulty. Most sections demand precision and quick reflexes. The Messenger’s gameplay impresses with its varied combat system and numerous unique abilities. You can control your character to jump across platforms, throw shurikens, slash, dash, and climb walls. A unique mechanic, the “Cloud Step,” also allows you to leap into the air after attacking your enemies.
The Messenger doesn’t have a health bar. Instead, when you die, a small demon appears nearby and chases you until you use in-game currency to make it disappear. Once you’ve accumulated enough money, it vanishes, and you get your money back. The game is full of collectibles; feel free to explore every nook and cranny and put your skills to the test. The tokens you find allow you to purchase powerful upgrades or enhance your abilities.
