Over the past few years, Square Enix has found a winning formula for its JRPGs by combining classic gameplay with modern elements that fit with current trends. It has also achieved huge success with highly popular titles such as Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default.

Speaking of Bravely Default, after two installments released on the Nintendo 3DS a few years ago, fans of the series have been eagerly awaiting a new version for Nintendo’s newer consoles. Once again, the collaboration between Nintendo and Square Enix lived up to these expectations with Bravely Default II. The game was released on February 26, 2021, on the Nintendo Switch.

Despite its name, Bravely Default II has an entirely new story and cast of characters compared to its predecessor, Bravely Second. If you were expecting a radical departure with Bravely Default II, think again. The developers did not attempt to overhaul this traditional system; instead, they’ve come up with a formula that avoids monotony by incorporating several elements that encourage strategic thinking.

The game relies on a turn-based combat system combined with the unique “Brave” and “Default” mechanics. Players can use “Brave Points” (BP) to perform multiple actions in a single turn or choose “Standard” to defend while saving BP. However, if the BP balance falls into the negative, the character must “pay back the debt” by sitting out multiple turns, leaving them vulnerable to enemy attacks.

As a result, players in Bravely Default II should carefully consider the right moment to activate the “Brave” option.

As with many other Square Enix titles, Bravely Default II offers players a wide range of classes (or “jobs”) for their characters. Specifically, after defeating a boss during the story, players will receive the Asterisk, which effectively “unlocks” a new class.

Bravely Default II allows you to equip two classes at once: the primary class gains levels through accumulated Job Points (JP), while the secondary class does not progress, although the skills remain fully usable.

Boss fights in Bravely Default II are surprisingly engaging due to their unique nature. These bosses embody characters who have mastered a new class, information the player didn’t have before. Each encounter plays out differently, depending on the tactics used and the composition of your team.

Beautiful visuals and an impressive soundtrack

It goes without saying that Square Enix games will be visually impressive. When it comes to the graphics in Bravely Default II, one word comes to mind: impressive.

The game has beautiful visuals, meticulously designed towns, and vibrant color palettes. Character models are very detailed, and the massive bosses are visually striking. Performance is generally stable, although there are occasional frame rate drops.

The soundtrack is composed by Revo, a member of the music group Sound Horizon. While the music evokes a strong “fantasy” vibe, it sometimes lacks depth and can sometimes be drowned out by the game’s other sound effects.
