About this Game
Persona 4 Golden is considered one of the greatest classic JRPGs of all time. Originally released on PS2 in 2008, the game received a Golden version on PS Vita three years later. More than a decade later, Nintendo decided to bring this legendary title back to its Nintendo Switch console, with graphical and gameplay improvements. As always, it remains an exclusive, but it is now possible to play it for free thanks to Nintendo Switch emulators.
The Persona 4 Golden ROM is available in NSP format; it runs perfectly on a Nintendo Switch emulator or a modified console.
The story of Persona 4 is undoubtedly its greatest strength, and it would be a shame to reveal too much. Here’s a brief overview: you are a first-year university student and are sent to live with your uncle, a detective. Shortly after your arrival, strange events begin to occur in the city, including murders.
The plot features some of the best twists in video game history. I promise you that no other JRPG will captivate you as much as Persona 4 did for me when I played it on PS Vita years ago. It’s a game you won’t be able to put down, not only because of its compelling story, but also because of its endearing characters and incredibly addictive gameplay.
Gameplay
In terms of gameplay, Persona 4 Golden might not appeal to everyone. It’s not necessarily immediately satisfying. The gameplay is relatively slow and emphasizes the story, but there are times when you simply observe the unfolding events. Sometimes it takes several hours before you can do anything particularly remarkable. But this contributes to the richness of the game’s atmosphere. The game is divided into two main parts: the Overworld, where you explore the city, interact with the inhabitants, and develop your social connections, and the TV World, where the dungeons take place.
Let’s start with the city. You can freely explore the city and its various locations. The main locations are the main street, the grocery store, the high school, and so on. These are well-known spots where the serial killer is active. You’ll interact with the inhabitants, try to solve the murder, or at least gather information about it. In short, two aspects are essential: your personal development and strengthening your social bonds with your friends. Activities like enjoying exceptional food, studying, or working part-time at the grocery store can improve the main character’s stats. This will then influence your applications for different jobs and even the deepening of your relationships with certain characters in the game.
Persona 4 offers more features than the third installment. This time around, you’ll develop your courage, perseverance, understanding, expression, and knowledge; beauty is clearly less important than in the third installment.
Social Links allow you to interact with friends and acquaintances and unlock specific cutscenes as you get to know them better. This will help awaken powers within you and aid you on your quest. It’s a functional system, but the main reward is getting to know the characters better. You feel close to them and seek to strengthen your social bonds with each one; it’s very addictive.
You’re then transported to the TV World channel to explore dungeons. If you’re familiar with the combat system of Shin Megami Tensei, you’ll feel right at home. Persona 4 continues the tradition of exploiting enemy weaknesses to your advantage. Each enemy is generally vulnerable to an element like electricity, ice, wind, etc.; if you hit them with that attack, they’ll be knocked down. Being knocked down allows characters to perform additional actions, such as eliminating another enemy. By exploiting weaknesses and switching between Personas, you can unleash impressive combos. Once all enemies are downed, you can launch a combined attack with the entire team.
An Enhanced Remake
This remake benefits from numerous improvements made by the developers for an optimal gameplay experience. You can adjust the difficulty levels and take advantage of quick save options, making it easier to start and finish your game.
In terms of controls, Persona 4 offers impeccable handling. Every menu option is intuitively placed, and the polished art style greatly enhances the experience. The main characters react perfectly when moving through dungeons; the camera angles are always optimal for total immersion.
