Slay the Spire is a roguelike digital card game. Unlike most card games where you develop and improve your deck over time, in Slay the Spire, you build it from scratch each time you play.

You start with the same basic deck, which varies depending on the character, and then expand it as you progress by defeating enemies, trading with merchants, and acquiring other resources. The further you advance, the larger and more sophisticated your deck becomes.

However, like any roguelike, the game is very difficult and requires many playthroughs to master the mechanics and enemy types. Early deaths can force you to start over and lose all your progress. Each character has experience points that unlock additional items, such as cards or relics, available in subsequent playthroughs.

Slay the Spire features three characters with distinct playstyles: Ironclad, a sword-wielding warrior; Defect, a futuristic character with unique energy mechanics; And my favorite, Silent, an assassin wielding a dagger and using paralyzing poisons. Each level offers unique gameplay and requires time to master – an essential aspect of a good roguelike, where half the fun lies in the repeated failures until you achieve mastery.

Between battles, you explore a map, a branching path leading to different events, ranging from battles to unlocking new cards to random occurrences. You also discover rooms where you can upgrade your cards or, conversely, lose health and become cursed.

Slay the Spire’s strength lies in its excellent combat system, based on action points and simple blocking mechanics, offering a wide range of progression. Each battle is unique thanks to the interactions between your deck, your relics, and your enemies.

The relics found in the game modify your character, granting them slight bonuses. When combined effectively, they form a formidable opponent. The different types of enemies also test your wits, each possessing exploitable weaknesses. For example, some units can revive their allies after two turns if they’re still alive. If you’re not careful, they can continue to regenerate and drain your health. But now I know how to take them all out at once. This is just one of the many addictive features.

Slay the Spire is a fantastic experience and one of the best games released on Nintendo Switch in 2019. It perfectly translates the roguelike genre to the Switch, thanks to its many unique and addictive features. You’ll easily spend dozens of hours playing it.
