Originally released on the 3DS, Pirate’s Curse has finally received a remake on the Nintendo Switch. The third installment in the Shantae franchise, it takes place just after Risky’s Revenge and before the events of Half-Genie Hero. Shantae is struggling to adapt to human life when the town of Scuttle is attacked, plunging her into a new adventure. Treated and fired from her job, she sets off with her arch-nemesis, Risky Boots, to stop an evil pirate captain from being resurrected and wreaking even more havoc than Risky has ever known.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is very similar to other Shantae games: a platformer and action game blending exploration and combat. Its main originality lies in the way levels are explored. In three of the four Shantae games, players explore levels by transforming into animals, most of which are identical across the three titles. In Pirate’s Curse, players use pirate gear. Instead of transforming into a monkey to leap long distances, you can now jump and glide using a pirate hat.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse was also the first game to introduce closed levels, offering a central world and a level selection screen, unlike previous installments where the world was entirely open and required a lot of backtracking before you could teleport. While different from the first two games, the core gameplay remains: hair-pulling battles, item collection, secret areas requiring special skills, and alternative endings for players who complete the game 100%.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse was the second game in the series to be released on the Switch, and it was a resounding success. It’s a fun game that fans of platformers and the series will undoubtedly enjoy, provided they can get used to its somewhat rudimentary graphics.
