Persona 4 Arena Ultimax stands apart from other games in the Persona series. Although published by Atlus, the franchise’s creator, it’s not a traditional JRPG. It’s a fighting game! That’s right: you can play as an iconic character from the series and participate in competitive one-on-one duels.

Story

The story of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax begins right after the end of the previous game. The action takes place in May 2012.

The heroes continue their search for the mysterious force behind all these events. Meanwhile, the Midnight Chain is broadcast once again in the city of Inaba. Now firmly rooted in the real world, the madness reaches new heights. The ending of Persona 1 is about to be revealed. The plot retains Persona 4’s beautiful art style despite the numerous dense, information-filled dialogues. The animated cinematic cutscenes, a hallmark of the series, advance the story at key moments.

Gameplay

As mentioned earlier, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is a 2D fighting game with cartoon-style graphics. It includes a total of 22 characters from Persona 3 and 4. In addition to the story mode, it offers several battle modes, each with customizable rules:

Arcade Mode: Fight opponents one after another until you reach the final boss.
Versus Mode: Play against another player or the AI.
Score Attack Mode: A mode focused entirely on combat, where you face waves of enemies. The goal is to attack and score points continuously.
Golden Arena: Functioning like a boss battle mode in an RPG, this mode allows you to accumulate experience points after battles to improve your character’s stats.
Network Mode: Play online with other players.

Each character is associated with a Persona, an avatar projected from within. Like mythological figures, the Persona acts as a partner that can join the battle, similar to Marvel vs. Capcom. The game’s strength lies in the ability to control Personas just like the classic characters. Their appearances are brief, and their intensive use is limited by a cooldown.

The combat mechanics are rich and deep. At the bottom of the screen, your SP gauge gradually fills with each hit you land on the enemy. This gauge allows you to unleash powerful and impressive attacks. The game also features a very flexible blocking system. Players who take the time to master the combat mechanics will be richly rewarded.

Impressive Graphics

Special attention has been paid to the graphics, even in the menus, which have their own distinctive style. The game runs flawlessly in both TV and handheld modes, without any slowdowns or stutters. Thanks to Shigenori Soejima’s distinctive style and expressiveness, each character and their respective Personas stand out from the rest, evoking the best moments of the series.

Furthermore, the animation of certain narrative sequences gives the impression of watching an anime. As with any work, the art style may not appeal to everyone, but the graphical quality is undeniable. The game boasts an excellent soundtrack, combining energetic rock and punk with more tranquil themes typical of visual novels. It offers numerous voice options, and you can easily switch between English and Japanese.
