About this Game
Into the Breach is a turn-based tactics game that blends strategy and puzzles with roguelike elements. Despite these technical terms, it’s a game that appears relatively simple at first glance.
Hordes of pixelated insects are invading the planet, and you must stop them. Each game begins by choosing a team of three combat mechs and ends when the planet is destroyed or the insects are defeated. The game strikes a perfect balance between puzzles and strategy.
Each game of Into the Breach is like a miniature campaign of a major strategy game such as XCOM. Rarely lasting more than a few hours, it offers all the strategic elements we love: upgrading robots and weapons, leveling up pilots, and fine-tuning your setup to achieve optimal performance. You can even choose the order in which you explore islands and missions, each with different challenges, objectives, and rewards.
Each mission is a captivating puzzle on an 8×8 grid. You can observe every cog in the machine from a top-down perspective. Unlike other tactical games, no turn will surprise you in Into the Breach. You can always anticipate the bugs’ next moves, and randomness is virtually nonexistent; therefore, it’s impossible to blame the game for mistakes. This transparency allows Subset Games to make the situation ruthless. Most of the time, I’m simply trying to survive. The game rarely aims for total victory, but rather for rescue.
Matches don’t end with the destruction of robots or the death of pilots, but with the destruction of the power grid. In other words, to win, you have to sacrifice machines to protect objectives each turn. Survival demands sacrifices, which gives weight to every decision, because they all count, and even in the most desperate situations, it’s still possible to turn the tide.
Time and again, I discovered an interesting interaction I hadn’t considered, and I extricated myself from seemingly hopeless situations. Once I did, each map became a playground of infinite possibilities. No situation is ever insurmountable; you just have to find a solution. And that moment is one of the simplest yet most intense joys I’ve experienced in a game.
These moments are possible thanks to the game’s immense complexity. Each turn, you have to take into account a multitude of elements: the positioning of the mechs, the types of enemy attacks, and even the environment, which plays a crucial role. Some mechs can create smoke to block your view, forests can catch fire, or you can throw insects into lava to eliminate them quickly.
The mech abilities prioritize forced movement and utility over pure damage. This means that all the techniques I just mentioned are easier to use. Each mech team has a unique combination that only becomes apparent after a few matches. As I said, you can observe every cog in the machine, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to master. Achieving mastery is a true feat.
