About this Game
Void Bastards: Jumping from an abandoned ship to a luxury liner in search of vital resources has never been so enjoyable. Void Bastards is a roguelite-style first-person shooter (FPS) game in which you cobble together items from randomly collected space debris—much like Fallout’s loot system—to obtain ever-better weapons and tools, as well as the food and fuel needed to advance. Strategically choosing when to fight or sneak, and which ships are worth boarding, turns your journey across the solar system into an adventure that’s as memorable as it is challenging.
You and your fellow Void Bastards are trapped aboard a prison ship traveling through space. The trip was cut short prematurely; the stilted onboard computer, reminiscent of HAL-9000, therefore began to wake the inmates to send them to retrieve the resources necessary to restart the ship. Pirates, space whales and all manner of obstacles stand in your way, but luckily there are plenty of ships just waiting to be boarded and plundered. The story is not very in-depth, because the game loop leaves little room for narration, but the universe that emerges is quirky and full of humor. Between the calm British aliens, the witty dialogues and the personal stories of each new main character, this adventure guarantees good times of laughter.
Gameplay
As a roguelite, the game relies on a repetitive loop allowing you to make small progress carried over from one game to the next. This progression relies on equipment crafted from quality space debris found during exploration and combat in each ship. Thanks to the new tools and weapons available, you have a varied arsenal to face your enemies and improve your equipment to gain power. Each item is fun to use and strikes a good balance between zany and real-world utility, allowing you to strategize based on each tool’s unique characteristics. “Kitty Bots”, for example, can be used as lures to lure enemies into the open or to group together weaker units to eliminate them with the explosion of the device. The “Rifter” is a weapon capable of capturing an enemy unit to teleport it elsewhere, which allows you to obtain all kinds of interesting bonuses.
You also have plenty of shooting options, but depending on the enemies you encounter, it may be best to take a different approach. “Tourists” explode if you get too close, “Ghosts” become invisible and reappear behind your back, and much more; However, each mechanic can be turned against the aliens, allowing you to refine your mastery of the game each time. There are only about a dozen enemy types, with color variations indicating tougher versions; This is a bit of a disappointment when you spend so many hours traveling through ships, always coming across the same adversaries. This lack of variety is also found in the ships themselves: styles are limited to a handful of models, although procedural generation allows for different layouts in each game.
Performance
The aesthetics and sound design are top-notch. The blinking and muttering aliens in the four corners of the ship maintain such tension that it almost feels like a horror game. The bright colors and “cartoon” style give the title a unique identity, providing a truly polished experience.
Performance-wise, the situation could be better. Stutters and framerate drops occur on certain ships cluttered with enemies or spatial faults, which complicates the task while the game requires speed and reflexes. Although these problems are rare most of the time, they multiply in the later, more difficult ships. The whole remains sufficiently qualitative to compensate for these defects; these problems remain exceptional, even if it is regrettable that they occur precisely on the vessels most loaded with elements.
Game loop
As a big fan of roguelikes, *Void Bastards* met all my expectations. The FPS part is surprisingly well-mastered, the gameplay loop offers a stimulating challenge that keeps you in suspense, and the aesthetics and sound ambiance are simply exceptional. A few connection issues and framerate fluctuations aren’t enough to spoil the experience: this mix between *Rogue Legacy* and *Fallout* is a must-have for any roguelike fan with a Nintendo Switch.
