The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is a static gothic visual novel that follows the stories of several characters across different eras as they attempt to reunite lost loves and explore seemingly irreconcilable conflicts. I will strive to avoid spoilers, as mystery and revelations are essential to fully appreciating this novel. All the sequences shown here are from the first part of the game.

You play as an unnamed character who has forgotten their past and awakens in a castle ruled by a dark-haired servant. She seems to know who you are. However, instead of speaking directly to you, she invites you to view scenes from the past taking place within the castle, hoping this information will help you regain your memory.

The stories she tells are all unique and set in different eras, separated by hundreds of years, but you will soon notice that they share similar themes. They all take place in castles, the maid appears in each one, and each story seems to feature a mysterious young white girl with red eyes, although it obviously can’t always be the same person. And everything ends tragically, which the characters attribute to a curse on the castle, cast by a witch who has yet to reveal herself.

After the introduction, the main plot revolves around the mystery of the maid and the witch. The story unfolds gradually, and we try to understand the connection between these four tales. I won’t say more to avoid spoiling the plot.

The story subtly addresses many adult themes. An important point is how physical, emotional, or other forms of abuse leave scars, and how individuals perceive this trauma. Although the game contains many dark elements, such as torture, murder, rape, and so on, it never treats them as mere outrage, but as genuine horror, and often focuses on the people who must confront the consequences of such traumatic events.

As mentioned earlier, the novel is static: while there are approximately eight different endings, most are simply bad, and the main plot is easy to guess. The modern version also offers a wealth of extra content, including side stories, summaries, and much more. And without further ado, The House in Fata Morgana is a dark yet hopeful and romantic gothic visual novel that explores tragedy, human flaws, and forgiveness.
