Bomberman is one of the longest-running franchises in video game history, celebrating its 33rd anniversary. With Super Bomberman R on Nintendo Switch, does this game deliver the thrilling experience we were expecting, or is it yet another disappointment?

Familiar classic feeling

Super Bomberman R gives off a strong sense of déjà vu, reminiscent of previous Bomberman titles. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll immediately feel at home in Super Bomberman R. All the levels are organized into a rectangular grid of squares, on which the characters move. The objective remains the same: destroy rocks, find power-ups, and defeat enemies to complete the level.

The game features a complete story mode, with dialogue and a well-crafted plot. The story is narrated with humor by the Bomberman brothers. Although it consists mainly of still images and dialogue, it manages to effectively introduce the characters.

Three Difficulty Modes

The game offers three difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, and Hard. These modes limit the number of lives and money you earn. After each level, you’ll need to spend money to continue. If you run out of money, you’ll have to start over.

Easy mode is ideal for beginners. On the other hand, Normal and Hard modes will be very challenging, as enemies move faster. Boss fights are also very difficult and will require you to find their weaknesses and attack with precision to win.

Multiplayer Mode: The Game’s Highlight

You’ll likely spend most of your playtime in multiplayer mode. Numerous customization options are available, such as battle length and random or fixed character placement. You can unlock new characters and levels after completing the story mode.

Online multiplayer is still in development, but the developers are working on it. This mode allows up to 8 players to play simultaneously on a Nintendo Switch.
