About this Game

If there are two things I love, it’s rewatching old anime and playing classic fighting games. A bit of 80s Gao for some deliciously gory mecha battles, a Guilty Gear disc for PS2 with some of the best sprite animations ever, and voila! A perfect retro night. It’s the perfect recipe for me, and Slave Zero X nails it.

Story

Surprisingly, Slave Zero X is a prequel to Slave Zero, a 1999 action game developed by Infogrames. Set five years before Slave Zero, Slave Zero X takes place in a dystopian metropolis under the rule of the Sovereign. Become a vengeful warrior rising from the city’s slums and harness the power of the stolen prototype slave unit against the Sovereign’s forces.

Extremely Challenging Gameplay

Slave Zero X is a classic 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up action game. It combines frantic forward movement with intense and relentless melee combat, reminiscent of traditional 2D fighting games. It also draws inspiration from Shinobi and Strider.

Your starting arsenal consists of a basic three-hit light combo and a charged heavy attack for combos. This is where Slave Zero X gets interesting: you’re encouraged to develop your skills to crush enemies by chaining together rapid combos and attacking relentlessly.

Slave Zero X doesn’t fully explain its mechanics, especially the more complex and subtle systems for defeating relentless enemies. This can be frustrating for new players. For example, your dodge ability allows you to evade attacks if you use it at the right moment. These techniques require precise timing to execute successfully.

The most important technique the game doesn’t teach you is the “Golden Circle.” It combines two skills: continuous attack and effective defense. Used correctly, it allows you to chain combos and attack relentlessly.

Relentless Mechanics

Slave Zero X presents a merciless world, and unless you play flawlessly, you risk suffering unfair punishments. When your character dies, they are cursed, which diminishes their combat abilities, and they respawn at checkpoints.

You can upgrade Show’s abilities to increase your chances against the Sovereign’s forces, but you’ll have to choose carefully, as the game is extremely stingy with rewards. I understand that the developers are aiming for high replayability and, therefore, a point system, but the high price of unlockable items could discourage players.

Stunning Graphics and Sound

Visually, Slave Zero X is stunning. With its detailed characters, fluid animations, and retro-styled 3D environments, Slave Zero X feels like it’s been lifted straight from a bygone era of video games.

The audio in Slave Zero X is also excellent, featuring an industrial, synthesized soundtrack. You can choose between English and Japanese voice acting.

In conclusion, Slave Zero X is an intense return to the series’ roots, keeping you on the edge of your seat with frenetic combos and brutal retaliation. It’s a bloody and thrilling experience with deep combat mechanics, stunning graphics, and a powerful soundtrack. This homage to the past holds nothing back.
