No More Heroes features Travis Touchdown, a wrestling and video game enthusiast who is also a secret assassin. In fact, he is ranked 11th among the world’s best assassins because, in this world, there is a ranking system for assassins. The goal of the game is to traverse the city of Santa Destroy with the Beam Katana sword, eliminating opponents ahead of you to reach first place. In short, you simply want to prove that you are the best.

No More Heroes consists of two main parts: the open world and ranked battles. The open world represents about 35 to 40% of the game and focuses heavily on mini-games. It’s quite fun at first, but it quickly becomes repetitive and can get tiresome. The game also features combat missions, some of which are quite fun, such as baseball minigames, defeating a pizzeria owner, and facing off against various characters using Travis’s different powers, including Dark Mode. They’re all very entertaining.

Ranked mode is the highlight of No More Heroes. It’s what really keeps you playing. It’s chaotic, bloody, and violent.

The only other element in this world is your apartment, where you can change clothes, save your game by going to the bathroom, listen to voicemails, play with your cat, or admire collectibles like playing cards and wrestling masks that you find. It’s a small, peaceful world, very different from the outside world.

It’s clear that No More Heroes isn’t about subtlety, and even though the open world is limited, there’s no denying that the combat system and overall gameplay experience are excellent. It has a unique style and polish. The game also features some truly memorable boss fights. It’s a bit like being given a lightsaber and told to kill everyone.
