About this Game

*Gimmick* was first released in 1992 to near-total indifference and with extremely limited market availability. The game was never released in the United States. Thirty-two years later, a pleasant surprise awaits: developer Clear River Games brings us a sequel, titled *Gimmick 2*. The game retains many of the mechanics of the original while being tweaked to fit modern gaming systems.

In *Gimmick 2*, you play as the lovable little green mascot again. The story is just perfunctory and nothing special. The game’s appeal lies primarily in its charming animations and gameplay mechanics. You can have your character jump, move in all directions, and dash forward. The protagonist can summon a star and throw it at the enemies. You can even jump on the star or use it to flip switches and defeat certain enemies. It bounces around before stopping when it runs out of momentum. This unique gameplay element can take a bit of getting used to if you haven’t played the original.

*Gimmick 2* is essentially a classic platformer that features numerous puzzle elements. While not strictly a puzzle platformer, much of the game requires you to think through how to clear each section without dying. You’ll need to calculate your moves to make the best use of platforms or outrun traps and enemies to reach the objective.

The game features six expansive levels set in different parts of the world. Each level takes at least twenty minutes – unless you’re a speed runner. Keep in mind that each area is filled with secrets to discover in exchange for rewards. The game offers numerous unlockable costumes and collectibles, as well as hidden areas that pose a real challenge. If you want to complete a level perfectly, be prepared to put your skills to the test.

When playing *Gimmick 2*, keep in mind that this isn’t just a standard platformer where you simply move from left to right, jump on enemies, collect coins, and reach the finish line. This title requires constant thinking to find ways to navigate the different areas. Some sections can be extremely difficult, requiring precise timing – not only for jumping, but also for interacting with the environment.
