Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was created by Yoshitaka Murayama, the mastermind behind the Suikoden series. Fans hope he will bring that magic to a new game that many consider the spiritual successor to their favorite franchise.

Story and Characters

We’ll start with the game’s story. The main character is Noah, a member of an expedition comprised of members from different factions. Your team is searching for what is known as the Prime Lens. After its discovery, it is used by one faction to conduct much of the research, provided they share all the information with the other kingdoms and, of course, don’t use it for nefarious purposes. Six months later, things have gone wrong, and you join the Guard, tasked with recruiting new members and bolstering its ranks.

Although the story may seem simpler than one might expect from a Murayama game like Suikoden, the hundred or so characters provide exceptionally rich lore and gameplay. Some are particularly funny, and most are fully voiced.

Gameplay

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a treat for fans of traditional JRPGs. This game offers all the features expected of a classic JRPG.

It features a city-building system, distinct tactical combat systems for the battlefield and duels, trade, dozens of mini-games (racing, fishing, Beyblade-style spinning top battles, etc.), and the ability to recruit a colorful cast of characters for both operational and non-operational roles.

But don’t let the side content distract you from the main story. This is primarily a turn-based JRPG with combat, offering up to six main characters and one support character.

Dozens of characters are available, each with unique special abilities and even different combos. Characters have access to standard magic, special skills that recharge via an energy bar, and a few minor combos.

Some skills are unique to certain characters, while others can be assigned via the rune system. And for those who prefer auto-battles, Eiyuden Chronicle also offers a fully customizable auto-battle feature for each character.

There’s a dedicated manager area called the Fortress City: your own personal stronghold. Here, you can build your city, construct buildings, upgrade your party, and complete quests. You can also recruit one of 100 potential allies.

Graphics and Sound

Visually, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is impressive thanks to a clever blend of 2.5D and 3D. The game primarily uses a 2.5D style with pixelated characters and monsters, combined with 3D backgrounds. While the character designs are familiar, the new monsters bring a touch of originality. They are fantastic, bizarre, and even more detailed and stylized than the main characters.

Numerous paths intersect in beautifully designed environments. The world map is vast and well thought out. Thanks to a unique art style, the towns and villages are simply stunning.

The soundtrack is exceptional. Two talented independent composers, one who worked on Wild Arms and the other on games like Star Ocean and Dark Souls, composed the background music. It is simply fantastic. You also have the option of English or Japanese voice acting.
